Mass trapping fruit flies with essential oils

Young male fruit flies are particularly attracted to a natural compound called methyl eugenol. The male flies need to feed on it to become sexually productive. Methyl eugenol is an ingredient of essential oils, such as eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil, which are used in alternative medicine. When these oils are placed in traps, male flies are trapped and can no longer mate with female fruit flies.
