Sharing best kept secrets in sustainable agriculture

Access Agriculture showcased successfully its vast library of multilingual videos on agroecological practices from different parts of the Global South at the recently organised Symposium on ‘Best Practices in Sustainable Agriculture and Appropriate Technologies’ in Lilongwe, Malawi that gathered together over 130 participants from African countries.

The Symposium, which was organised by ECHO East Africa and Canadian Foodgrains Bank, aimed at providing a stimulating platform to sustainable agriculture practitioners in East and Southern Africa to network and share best practices and appropriate technologies to support sustainable food production systems. It was inspired by witnessing a number of NGOs, which are doing very good work in agroecology, but are operating in isolation.

The 3-day event included presentations, practical sessions, field trips and an appropriate technology fair. The themes covered by the Symposium included nutrition, indigenous seeds, agroecology, renewable energy, agroforestry, permaculture, appropriate technology and Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), among others.

Access Agriculture set up a booth at the appropriate technologies fair and presented its video-led extension model, a smart projector that is used for last-mile delivery of extension videos, and its Entrepreneurs for Rural Access (ERAs) initiative, which involves rural youth to make a business around the screening of agricultural videos to farming communities using the smart projector.

“We also demonstrated to the visitors how our smart projector works and shared leaflets on our ‘Young Changemakers’ book, which has a scannable barcode to lead people to the website for downloading inspiring stories of ERAs,” said Blessings Flao, Access Agriculture, Malawi & Southern Africa Coordinator.

Some of the organisations that took part in the Symposium include Catholic Relief Services Malawi, Solidaridad East and Central Africa, Rural Poultry Centre, Hope International (Malawi), Five Talents (Kenya), and Churches Action in Relief and Development (CARD), among others.
